The River Wey Navigation was built around 100 years before the Canal Age, and runs for around 15 miles, linking Guildford to the Thames at Weybridge. This was extended in 1764 with the opening of the Godalming Navigation, which extended the waterway by another 4 miles. We’re not going quite that far on this walk, as we’re doing it in winter, so we’re going to do the first stretch between Weybridge and West Byfleet.
The Wey Navigation provides a green corridor through some of Surrey’s most built up areas, and the unique landscape of the Navigation contains a rich variety of wildlife habitats in a relatively small area. If we’re really, really lucky, and walk along in near total silence, shushing strangers, we may see kingfishers and the ever shy water voles, but as that would make the walk considerably less fun we might just have to hang out for some herons, and other waterfowl, and just enjoy one another’s company.
We’re going to meet at 10:45, and set off at 11 sharp. The walk to our lunch stop will take approx. 2 hours, and the walk to our end point will take around 45 minutes (speed on this latter part will obviously depend upon how much roast dinner we’ve eaten).
