How Much Have You Saved In Dry January?

Raining Money

End of Dry January

It’s the end of dry January, and now is a good time to reflect on what you have achieved by stopping drinking for a bit. One reason to feel grateful for going dry in January might be that there’s an extra few quid in your pockets, to tide you over the long gap between Christmas and pay day. So how much have you saved?

Figures from the Office of National Statistics suggest that the average person spends £40 a month on alcohol. If you’re a heavier than average drinker, and you start to factor in the additional costs of an alcohol-heavy social life, the savings can quickly add up. A trip to the pub might cost you £20, but what about the takeaway you stopped for on the way home? Or a taxi? Wine with a meal out can add significantly to the cost of the experience, not to mention the hazards of lost phones, cards, throwing up in a taxi, or ruining your brand new (and slightly too expensive) shoes.

Saving money

Earlier in the month we polled our members on how much they expected to save from their Month Off Booze, and the results were startling. More than 50% of those polled expected to save more than £200 in January from not drinking, and 16% thought they would save more than £400. No one thought that they would save less than £100.

Eliminating alcohol from your life could easily save you £2400 over the course of the year. If you put that money aside at the end of the month, you could treat yourself to a spa day or a seriously good meal out, save it up till the end of the year and you could book yourself a holiday.

And that’s in addition to the health benefits of taking a break from alcohol. Even if you’ve slipped up at a couple of points in your dry January, you’ve still made a significant saving on a normal month. So give yourself a pat on the back and line up a treat for February.
